Martyrs Remembered

The question is often asked, "why do Orthodox Christians honor the names of Martyr Saints and venerate (not pray) their Icons"? The answer is quite simple, they are our brothers and sisters in Christ! They and the Church Fathers defined our Orthodox faith and set an example for all Orthodox Christians who were to follow! They proclaimed their faith and put their trust in Christ, reminding us of the price they paid to Glorify Our Risen Lord! They were placed in the position of either denying Christ or suffering a terrible death if they acknowledged Him as their Lord and Savior. It is a tradition of the Orthodox Church to remember and honor them because Christ remembered and honored them! "Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life"! Rev 2:10.

During the Orthros service preceding the Divine Liturgy and at the conclusion of the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in every Orthodox Church in the world, the Priest will lovingly recite the names of those Saints remembered on that particular day before the congregation. Here following is a small listing of those Saints and even if a complete listing could be included, it would be only a small number of those remembered. Sadly, a fuller account of the Martyr's names and manner of death written by Eusebius Pamphilus, Bishop of Caesarea, Palestine, has been lost in antiquity and only a small number of names are accounted for. All of them however, are written in His Eternal Book Of Life. And because He has honored them, they should not be generalized nor given lip service. Being faithful to Christ, they have bonded Orthodox Christians of today, to themselves, providing us with 2000 years of kinship leaving us a legacy of faithful worship to our Risen Lord!

The intent of the following work is to honor and remember certain of the Saints who contested, with a few additional exceptions, with Roman authority in the first centuries of the growth of the church. Their sufferings and the type of cruelties they experienced in the defense of their faith in our Lord and Savior shine resplendently as an example to all of us. It should be noted that the listing may contain dual listings of saints due to differences in spelling and/or tradition, better the duality than the omission of the name of one of these beloved saints of Christ.

Additional information regarding the Martyrs and the Feast Days of the Saints can be obtained from the Daily Readings of the Holy Transfiguration Monastery, Brookline, Massachusetts and from the Archdiocese and/or the Synaxarion. Readers may also want to peruse the listings of Martyrs contained at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search/Category:Christian_martyrs_of_the_Roman-era. Once in the Search page for Christian Martyrs, click on any of the particular sub-categories on the page for specific information regarding era and particular Saints.

The following is only a small representation of those Saints who courageously contested and the manner of their death.

Note #1. The listing of "burned to death" was typically poring pitch all over the Saint and setting them afire to be used as a lamp.

Note #2. The listing of "Sword" was usually beheading.

"May your memories be eternal, dear brothers and sisters, for you are worthy of blessedness, everlasting memory and HIS Crown of Life".
